Chapter 13

Malcolm walked through Jason’s open front door and found him sitting at his kitchen table, a computer system set up in front of him.

“Oh, good, you’re here,” he said. “I can’t make heads or tails of this thing. I hate to admit it, but I’m clueless.” Jason dragged his hand through his hair as he stared at the frozen monitor.

A surge of annoyance and frustration swept through Malcolm, tightening his fists. Since when did Jason even have a computer, and why was it such an emergency? Malcolm needed to be back with Celia right now, explaining to her what happened and helping her with the girls. “Tell me this isn’t why you called me over here.” Malcolm walked over to the computer and disconnected the Ethernet cable, and then powered off the system. “No one’s computers are working and havoc is spreading through the town. I’ve spent all morning trying to figure out what’s happening and get things back under control, but it’s been a futile effort. The best thing to do for now is to unplug and shut them down.”

Jason sat back and let out a deep breath, obviously relieved to be done with the thing. “Johnny just called and told me about the problems he’s having at the gate. He was hoping you’d be back there hours ago. What’s going on around here?”

“Celia just got back and I didn’t want to leave the girls alone.”

“You are planning on going back over there, right? The guardhouse’s systems need to take priority right now.”

“I get that. And yes, I’m going back over there. But first...there’s something else you need to know.”

“I’m almost afraid to ask.” Jason leaned back in his chair, a worried pinch around his eyes.

“One of Celia’s cousins asked if she could check her email. I brought her my laptop and as soon as she started it up and connected to the internet, it crashed.”

“Okay?” Jason said, looking unimpressed. “That seems to be what’s been happening everywhere. Even here.” He gestured toward the computer in front of him.

“I believe that somehow a virus has gotten past our firewalls. It’s infected everyone. I’m going to have to go to each business, unplug them from the internet, run the virus scans, clean up the systems and reestablish their firewalls and virus protection, and only then allow them to be reconnected to the network.”

“Fine. If that’s what we’ll have to do, then we’ll do it.” He stood.

Malcolm hesitated. “I’m not sure we should reconnect everyone right away. We need to find out what this virus is and how it got past our defenses. In fact, I think everyone should stay offline until we do. My first priority is Johnny. But no one is going to be real happy about no longer having their internet, which is just going to hurt my case when I go before the Council for Judgment.”

“I can only imagine,” Shay said, walking into the room. “I have to admit to being a little upset myself.
